Life is Better than Good

At the very beginning of 2012 I felt a little gloomy because, unlike 2011, I was starting off the year not knowing when anyone would be coming to visit NYC (and us of course) nor did I know when I (we) would be heading West to visit.  But the calendaring all started to come together, first, with the wonderful news that Taylor and Kate would visit the end of March and than with Lindsey and Adam announcing they were going to bring the girls and come in May. We were delighted.  When it occurred to me that both Dallin and Whitlie were going to be graduating in April, I found my first reason for justifying the expense of heading west. I booked my round trip ticket for the last two weeks of April and away I went.  Now I am able to look forward to other trips before the year’s end.  But I’ll tell about them in my next entry. Life is good, but when we are able to share it with those we love, life is better than good.

Whitlie graduated from BYU Law School.

Dallin graduated from UVU.

First we go IN and than we go OUT.  What can this be all about? A grandma mystery date.

Paying attention to directions to get where we want to go. A grandma mystery date.

What's in your name? Another grandma mystery date.

I was able to have some nice visits with my sister, Janet, and my Mom.
A great place to take grandchildren

The BUG Carousel is a big hit.

You can't leave without seeing the Dora the Explorer 3-D movie.

Adam really had the spirit of the moment.

Great weather for a picnic and playing at the play ground in Central Park

Springtime In NYC

It seems that many parts of the nation are experiencing an early spring after an exceptionally mild winter.  We want everyone to know that we are enjoying the early spring too.  Here are a few pictures verifying that spring has arrived in along the east coast and in NYC.  We hope you enjoy them too.

Cherry Blossoms at the Lincoln Memorial came early this year and we were able to see it.
We were able to enjoy the cherry blossoms with Kate & Taylor!

Enjoying the day with about 10,000 other springtime tourists.

A spectacular spring day!
Recently we awoke to this beautiful view of the setting moon from our apartment window.

We look out our window and enjoy this beautiful springtime bliss along the 495 LIE on/off ramp.

When we open our bedroom blinds we enjoy the springtime view of a neighboring apartment courtyard.

Looking past the trash we can watch the daily progression of springtime buds on the trees.

To the left of this parking lot we see that trees will soon provide summer shade.
Last Friday Stan was able to enjoy a beautiful springtime view of NYC from a helicopter.

Tulips are always beautiful but in Manhattan amongst the concrete they are amazing!
From our apartment window we can enjoy the wildlife (pigeons) all year round.

Springtime is NYC is great but these beautiful people are why we really love it here.

Going Back in Time

WHAT? WAIT!  Please grab those “hands of time” and slow down the clock for me. My life is passing way too fast.  I started off this New Year with a goal to make more substantial progress on the family projects that we brought back here to New York with us to do.  I really want to work on the video transfer project but since I am technologically challenged I have to wait for my schedule to coincide with the person who said he could help me understand the workings of my computer.  Meanwhile I started going through my old journals to see if there was anything worth saving for posterity’s sake.  This “little” project has sucked me back into time and I have spent HOURS typing up and these old entries and reliving forgotten memories.  The following entry is one of many from the years we spent in Sacrament, CA.  Living in this old trailer on the Jensens' property holds many happy memories for us.

April 22, 1980
"The last week has been very busy.  When we got home (from a trip to Montana), our good friends, Kent and Lynette Jensen, mentioned, not thinking we would take them seriously, that the old trailer they rented would be vacant in a few days.  Stan and I discussed seriously our living in an old, 8’ x 40’, 1½ bedroom trailer and decided to do it.  Our main reasoning was 1.  The rent was cheap, only $l35 and that included utilities, (We were paying $250 plus utilities for a two bedroom.) so we could continue to try and get out of debt and save or get ahead; 2, We would be out of the apartment living and have a yard for Don to play in with terrific neighbors like the Jensen’s; 3.  We could also plant a garden, and 4.  We could still stay in the ward.  So for these main reasons and many smaller ones we told the Jensen’s we’d “take it” if they would have us.  I don’t think that they could really believe we’d even consider living in such small quarters, especially, Kent.  But they seemed more than glad to have us as neighbors and tenants if it was what we wanted; that made us feel real good.

So the last week I have spent cleaning, sorting, packing and unpacking.  We moved into the trailer last Saturday with the help of the Jensens and I’m still sorting and putting away.  We had to put the majority of our things in an old attic and storage they had here.  I’m trying to get us down to just the things we really use the most so that we’re not too crowded.  . . . Don sure does seem to enjoy it here and spends a lot of time outside playing.

We bought a really nice hide-a-bed couch for $360+tax wholesale.  Stan and I sleep on the couch, Don in the ½ bedroom (which is a bed in the hallway) and the bedroom will be for the baby and extra things.”

July 16, 1980 (Our second son, David, was born on June 20, 1980)
“We’re glad that it’s been an unseasonably cool summer thus far this year.  We’ll have a few hot days followed by several cool days.  The last two days have been about 100 degrees and our little trailer isn’t much cooler.  We’re really glad we moved to the trailer for many reasons, it feels like the right move for us.  But I must admit there have been a few challenges besides small quarters.  First it was the slugs in the bathroom and the moths (I hate moths.) and the musty smell at night.  Now it’s the roaches and the ants.  The roaches aren’t bad.  I only see one or two every other day.  But these little bitty ants are something else.  Yesterday I found them inside the honey bottle, peanut butter jar, and the unopened jar of salad dressing.  Most of the time I take it all in stride but there are a few bad days when it’s very frustrating.”

What great memories of a new little family, good friends, lessons learned while trying to save money, and the value of having a yard to live and play in.

Stan, Don, and I not long after we moved to Sacramento in 1979.

At two Don was really into horses.

Don loved the yard but was not happy with our small  Christmas tree.

2011 at a Glance

What a wonderful year we have had.  As I thought about how to finish off my blog postings for 2011, I felt inspired by my daughter-in-laws and their own recaps of 2011. So here goes . . .

The highlight of January 2011 would have to be getting to know the sisters in my ward better. I was called to serve as the Relief Society president in the Rego Park 1st Ward.  I love the sisters of our ward. Our ward is rich with the blessings that come with new members and ethnic and cultural diversities.

RS B-day Celebration
RS -B-day Service Project
Making baby blankets and rice bags.

The highlight of February would have to be going to Virgina to see Whitlie do a Moot Court.  But we also enjoyed Stan’s “kind of" birthday by going to see Mary Poppins on Broadway.  (Stan's birthday is February 29th that is why it is his "kind of" birthday.)

The Moot Court Experience

Hands down the best part of March was Garrett Stanton Kauffman being born and my trip to go meet him and visit with the family!

David, the proud & happy father.

Surprise cousin visit from the Bangerter family!

Want to think I'm still young.

I love to spend time reading with my granddaughters!

There is no place like the excitement of New York City to enjoy being in love.  So the best part of April was Taylor and Kate’s trip here to see us.  Of course we knew who Kate was as Adam’s cousin, but we loved getting to know Kate in her new role as Taylor’s sweetheart.  It was wonderful having them here.  We took way too many pictures of them, so I have only posted a few.

Our trip to Boston and Waldon Pond

Taylor loves to make Kate laugh.

Nothing like a day in Central Park

We had just had dinner a Lombardi's pizza.

Although Taylor and Kate’s visit spilled over into May, Adam and Lindsey’s visit with the girls in mid May takes the highlight spot for May.

The promised horse ride.

Our walk around the world.

Lindsey, Adam, Anna, and Alina Bangerter.

Lest you think it was rude of me to bounce Taylor and Kate off the highlight list for May they actually get the highlight for June with their wedding on June 25th.

A happy day!

Two wonderful men.

Kate is a great addition to our daughters.

A day for  dancing and celebrating.

Stan, the love of my life.

Addi & Cassidy - cousins make the best friends.

The highlight for July is a tie between Dallin and Whitlie coming to NYC to begin their internships and my trip to Utah to care for Dmitri for three weeks.
At times Dallin & Whitlie found our life style too much.

Beware!  This Kauffman family cemetary has chiggars! Stan ended up with abou 170 bites, and I had about 150.  I am not sure Dallin and Whitlie counted theirs.

August was brimming with competition for a monthly highlight; Dallin and Whitlie, Angie and McKell, an earthquake, a hurricane, and a trip to Arizona to see David graduate from PA school and spend time with family (in 116 degree heat).  Which one would you say was my highlight?  If you guessed Arizona and the grandchildren, you were correct!  Even Mother Nature cannot beat time with my grandchildren.

A happy but HOT graduation day!

September was an appreciated slower month with just the normal business of living in a city of millions.  However, the highlight of the month would have to be the opportunity we had to help with Hurricane Irene’s flood damage cleanup in New Jersey.  However, we did enjoy a rainy day at the US Open too.

The US Open with our friends Gwen & Howard Haglund.
Although Stan and I attended an enjoyable husband/wife in-service training in the beautiful mountains out side of Pittsburg, PA at a place called Laurelville the highlight of  October would have to be the opportunity be with family once again.  First, was to go to Utah and celebrate my mom’s 80th birthday and the second would be the opportunity to have Aubrey fly back with me to NYC and spend a week with us for her 30th birthday.  What a gift for Stan and I too! (Thanks Camron)

Mom looks great for 80 years of age!

No question about it, the highlight of November was visiting our friends the Weber's at their home in Clinton, CT and spending Thanksgiving day at Old Sturbridge Village, MA.  This was my first Thanksgiving not cooking a Thanksgiving dinner (and it might not be my last).

Now, I know December is not over yet so there may still be some unexpected highlight just around the corner, but for now I would say the highlight for December is the incredible pleasant weather we are enjoying which makes taking in the festivities of the holidays in NYC very enjoyable.

We are grateful for the many friends and family who have come to visit NYC in 2011 and stayed with us!  It has been so enjoyable to see you and have you stay!  (The following are pictures of oth
